Heat is the principal enemy of engine oil, and Dubai supplies it in quantity. Oil degrades faster at high sump temperatures, and the short journeys typical of city driving here compound the problem: an engine that never reaches full operating temperature does not burn off the moisture and fuel dilution that accumulate in the oil. The result is that the interval printed in a European service book is frequently optimistic, and following it exactly is how engines here wear faster than they should.

Using the correct grade is not a detail. Modern engines specify oil by viscosity and by manufacturer approval, and the two are separate requirements. An oil of the right viscosity without the right approval can lack the additive package a particular engine needs, and on engines with variable valve timing or a particulate filter the consequences show up months later as a fault that appears mechanical. We use the specification the manufacturer lists for your engine, and we tell you what it is.

A filter is not simply a filter either. The bypass valve pressure and the media differ between a correct filter and a cheap one, and on a cold start the difference determines how quickly oil reaches the top of the engine. It is a small part of the invoice and a large part of whether the service was worth doing. We fit genuine or matching-quality OEM and we note which on the invoice.

While the car is on the lift we check the rest of the fluids and look for leaks, because that is when it costs nothing extra to do. Coolant condition, brake fluid moisture content, power steering and transmission fluid levels are all read, and any leak is traced to its source rather than noted as a wet patch. Finding a weeping seal early is the difference between a gasket and a rebuild.

The service indicator is reset properly and the work is recorded against the car with date, mileage and parts fitted. That record keeps a manufacturer warranty intact and holds value at resale, both of which depend on documentation rather than on where the work was done. Owners are often told otherwise by dealers, and it is worth being clear: correct specification plus documentation is the requirement.

A note on intervals for cars that barely move. Oil degrades by time as well as by distance: acids form, additives deplete and moisture accumulates in an engine that never reaches full temperature. A car covering three thousand kilometres a year still needs its oil changed annually, and owners are frequently told otherwise.
